BCIA Recertification - Continuing Education Hours
Summary of Requirements


Candidates for recertification must complete 55 hours (30 hours for Senior Fellows) of accredited continuing education related to the blueprint, relevant to biofeedback and/or the disorder you may be treating with the majority of your hours being biofeedback specific.  *Individuals certified in both General and Neurofeedback may use CE credits from accredited providers for recertification in both programs.

New in 2010

  • 3 hours of the required 55 (or 30 for Senior Fellows) must be related to ethics and professional standards
  • the 25 hours of elective continuing education are no longer required; however we do encourage you to continue to read and study good materials that are outside of the accredited work.

Accredited work is described as follows:

 

College Courses - Registered attendance in an undergraduate or graduate course approved and offered through a regionally accredited academic institution.

 

Professional Instruction - Teaching at a regionally accredited academic institution or at a nationally recognized, accredited professtional venue is counted as class time plus two hours of preparation time are allowed for each hour of instruction time.

 

Professional Organization Courses - Continuing education courses offered through a professional organization or private agency. Such courses must be approved through an accrediting agency (e.g., AMA, ANA, APA, etc.).  Documentation should indicate the accrediting agency.

 

Professional Preparation - Authorship of a peer-reviewed document (journal, manuscript, written or edited textbook chapter, platform or poster presentation critiqued or otherwise reviewed by formally designated professional colleagues).  Credit for publications is allowed as follows:

  • Book authored          40 hours
  • Book edited             40 hours
  • Book chapter           20 hours
  • Journal article          10 hours
  • Masters thesis         20 hours
  • Dissertation             40 hours

Presentation  - *based on the accreditation and the topic, but could be counted that for every 1 presentation hour, you could also receive an additional 2 preparation hours.

Research - Per special review on an individual basis.

 

Chapter/State Meetings - AAPB Chapter/State/Regional Biofeedback Society Meeting hours apply toward recertification.

 

Tapes - Used in a course through a regionally accredited educational institution or approved continuing education.

 

Distance Education/Home Study Courses - Courses relevant to the Blueprint offered by a regionally accredited university, the national body of your profession, or a BCIA accredited training program.

 

Patent - Approved patents within a Blueprint area - 10 hours.

 

Mentoring of Candidates - BCIA approved mentors should submit candidate’s name, address and phone number.  Upon verification, BCIA allows five continuing education hours for each candidate if a minimum of 15 hours mentoring was provided.  Attendance at the BCIA Mentor’s Workshop is worth 2 hours of continuing education.

 

Exam Item Construction - One-half hour of accredited continuing education will be given for reading an article, documented published book or study from a peer reviewed journal and preparing an examination question. The examination item should be comprised of a question, correct answer and three distractors (incorrect answers), and sourced from the Suggested Reading List. A maximum of 20 hours per four-year certification period is allowed (i.e., 40 questions maximum).  Test question forms are available from BCIA upon request or on the website at bcia.org.
