Board Certification in Biofeedback
Board certification in biofeedback covers all modalities including thermal, SEMG, HRV, SCL, respiration, and an introduction to neurofeedback.
These programs are for the person wanting to add biofeedback skills to their toolbox or the person with some basic training and experience in the field who has elected to follow the standards of education and training to gain board certification. Additionally, there is a category for those biofeedback providers who can document many additional years of training and experience, but now wish to gain the formal recognition of the BCIA credential – Certification by Prior Experience.
Entry-Level Certification Programs
All certification programs require didactic education covering the blueprint of knowledge statements (the science, history, and theory of the modality), proof of human anatomy/physiology course work, mentoring to learn the hands-on application of skills, and the passing of a standardized written exam.
Clinical Certification: requires a BA/BS minimum degree in a health care field such as psychology, therapy, counseling, nursing, or medicine from a regionally accredited academic institution. A complete list of accepted degrees may be found in our brochure.
Technician Certification: has no educational pre-requisites and requires a licensed supervisor to guide and take responsibility for their work.
Applicants for Technician Certification should be aware that:
(1) This program is intended for individuals who already are employed as biofeedback technicians since there is only a limited number of new technician positions.
(2) They must pass the same rigorous certification exam that we administer to candidates who possess at least a BA/BS degree.
(3) Technicians who are involved with the treatment of medical or psychological disorders must be supervised by appropriately licensed health care providers who carry a valid state-issued license/credential in a BCIA-approved health care field to work within their specific scope of practice.
(4) Technicians who work in non-clinical fields must be supervised by a Clinical or Academic BCIA Board Certified Provider.
Academic Certification: requires a master’s degree in any field and is for those who use biofeedback in an educational, research or supervisory setting. BCIA also offers certifications in Neurofeedback and Pelvic Muscle Dysfunction Biofeedback which uses SEMG biofeedback and behavioral interventions to treat elimination disorders and pelvic pain.
