ISNR Webinar: Cultural Responsiveness in Mental Health and Neurofeedback Practice: Inclusive Care Across Identities and Contexts - Session 1

Presented by: Leslie Sherlin PhD

This is registration for SESSION 1 scheduled for July 11, 2025 at 12:00noon ET (Session 1 of a 3-part series. NOTE: Each session requires a separate registration).

This three-part CEU webinar series is designed for mental health professionals who also deliver neurofeedback services. It emphasizes the importance of cultural responsiveness, ethical awareness, and clinical adaptability across varying client backgrounds and beliefs. Each one-hour session builds on the last while remaining suitable as a standalone training.

Session 1 explores the rationale for integrating cultural awareness into both mental health and neurofeedback practice. It outlines foundational ethical guidance from the American Psychological Association (APA, 2017) and the American Counseling Association (ACA, 2014), emphasizing how individual and sociocultural contexts shape the therapeutic alliance and treatment outcomes. Forester-Miller and Davis’s (2016) ethical decision-making model is introduced as a practical framework.

Session 2 (NOT INCLUDED IN THIS REGISTRATION) shifts toward clinician self-reflection and cultural humility. Participants are encouraged to explore how their own identities, assumptions, and implicit biases can influence the client relationship. This hour includes case-based discussions and strategies for applying ethical self-awareness in everyday clinical decisions, building on the APA’s guidance around systemic and contextual considerations. This presentation will be held on July 25, 2025 and requires a separate registration.

Session 3 (NOT INCLUDED IN THIS REGISTRATION) focuses specifically on neurofeedback. It addresses how to ethically navigate issues such as gender-related consent when placing electrodes, touch sensitivity, and client concerns around brain-based technologies. Clinicians will learn how to clearly explain neurofeedback processes and outcomes in a manner that respects spiritual or cultural beliefs, ensuring safety and informed participation. By the end of the series, participants will have gained practical tools for delivering services that are both clinically effective and respectful of each client’s identity, preferences, and meaning-making systems. This presentation will be held on August 8, 2025 and requires a separate registration.
