AAPB Webinar: Practical Strategies for Teaching Healthy Breathing and Addressing Overbreathing Presented by Dr. Inna Khazan PhD, BCB-L, BCB-HRV-L and Dr. Fred Shaffer PhD, BCB-P, BCB-HRV-P Healthy breathing is essential for physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being. Yet many individuals—by some estimates, 10–25% of the U.S. population—habitually engage in overbreathing, a subtle but pervasive form of breathing dysregulation. Over time, overbreathing can contribute to or exacerbate a wide range of conditions, including asthma, anxiety, panic disorder, chest pain, gastrointestinal issues, and chronic pain. Among athletes and other high performers, it can significantly impair focus, decision-making, reaction time, endurance, and recovery. Clients often report that traditional “deep breathing” exercises leave them feeling lightheaded, short of breath, or more anxious—classic signs of overbreathing and related hypocapnia. Despite their good intentions, these efforts can decrease oxygen delivery to the brain and body, worsening symptoms rather than relieving them. This webinar will provide a brief overview of the key principles of respiratory physiology and then focus on practical strategies for identifying and addressing overbreathing. Participants will learn how to teach healthy breathing that supports self-regulation, enhances performance, and reduces physiological distress—whether in clinical, educational, or performance-based settings.
