BF Technician

BIOFEEDBACK TECHNICIAN ENTRY LEVEL

Basic Information

Currently, this biofeedback certification is offered only for those who are working and living in the United States and Canada and who are currently working for a licensed and BCIA certified professional who is providing legal supervision. This certification path has no specific educational prerequisites.

Applicants for Technician Certification should be aware that:

  • This program is intended for individuals who are already employed by a licensed and BCIA certified provider; however, anyone is permitted to begin training.

  • Technicians must be supervised by those who are legally able to supervise non-licensed personnel and must work within their supervisor’s specific scope of practice. A technician is not allowed to supervise or mentor other applicants.

  • Should the employment change, the certification is no longer valid until the technician can once again demonstrate current employment in accordance with the standards as outlined above.

  • Technician names are not listed on our provider directory as they are not considered independent clinicians.

Requirements

The following are the basic requirements for Technician Certification:

  • Didactic education course covering the 42-hour BCIA Blueprint of Knowledge statements from a regionally accredited academic institution or a BCIA Accredited Didactic Training Program

  • Proof of a human anatomy, human physiology or human biology course covering the organization of the human body and all 11 systems, taken from a regionally-accredited academic institution or a BCIA-approved provider is required.

  • Mentoring to learn the application of clinical skills. Mentoring Contact Hours refers to 10 hours of time spent to review 20 patient sessions and to learn basic equipment, electrode placements, and personal self-regulation skills. Please see the Mentoring Handbook for complete information.

  • Certification Exam - When you have been notified that your application has been accepted, you may make plans to take your certification exam.  All exams are proctored by our online proctoring service.

Requirements may be met in any order and do not have to be completed prior to the exam.

Filing an Application and Fees

Once you have investigated the program and are sure you are able to meet all the requirements, the first step is to file an application with a filing fee of $150.  Your application will be valid for two years.  When you are ready to take the certification exam, you must pay the $100 certification fee. All fees are non-refundable.

Once your application has been submitted and approved, you may make plans for the certification exam. The signature area includes your agreement to abide by the BCIA Professional Standards and Ethical Principles of Biofeedback and follow the appropriate rules and regulations of your supervisor's profession and state.

Biofeedback Technician Certification Exam

**YOU MUST HAVE A VALID APPLICATION ON FILE BEFORE REGISTERING FOR THE EXAM!**

All exams must be proctored using our online proctoring service that allows you to take your exam on your own computer in your office or at home.  You must follow all the regular procedures - filing your application, paying all fees, filing the exam registration form showing us the date you selected.  Once this is all in place, we will connect you with the online proctoring service.  This process will also save you money!

The Biofeedback Exam for Technicians has been revised to be a shorter version that includes only those items as would be in the scope of work appropriate for a non-licensed person.

The exam may be taken at any time after approval of your application and payment of all fees; however, we recommend it as the last requirement in the certification process. Additional information regarding taking the exam can be found here Exam FAQ.

The examination is offered in English only and is based on the Blueprint of Knowledge Statements. The exam consists of approximately 50 multiple-choice items sourced from the Core Reading List.  The number of exam items from a blueprint area correspond to the number of hours in that rubric; the smaller the rubric, the fewer questions will be in the exam from that content area.  For more information, please refer to Biofeedback Exam 101, remembering that some of this information may be appropriate for those who are not technicians.

  •  There is an additional $20 fee paid directly to the online proctoring service.

  • A Core Reading List is provided to aid in preparation for the exam and to reinforce the learning of the science, history, and theory of biofeedback.

After the Certification fee of $100 is paid you may register for the exam using the Exam Registration Form **APPLICATION FOR EXAM AND ALL FEES MUST BE PAID AT LEAST 1 WEEK PRIOR TO PREFERRED EXAM DATE**

Certification is valid for four years and recertification is based on the documentation of 30 hours of accredited, biofeedback-relevant continuing education or the successful completion of the certification exam.
