About BCIA

The Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA) was created in 1981 as the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America, with the primary mission to certify individuals who meet education and training standards in biofeedback and progressively re-certify those who advance their knowledge through continuing education. To reflect our global identity, we adopted this new name  in March, 2010. BCIA is an autonomous nonprofit corporation whose policies and procedures are set by an independent board of directors, comprised of a rotating group of distinguished clinicians, researchers, and educators.

Board certification is the mark of distinction for providers of biofeedback and neurofeedback services and establishes that the individual has met entry-level education and training requirements. However, BCIA certification is not a substitute for a valid license or other credential to legally practice one's profession as regulated by health care practices in your country.

International Applicants - License Required

**All International applicants for BCIA certification programs, outside of the US and Canada, must carry a valid government-issued license/credential that regulates clinical health care practice.**  Until such time as a country or region forms a professional organization who becomes a formal BCIA affiliate (e.g., Australia and Mexico) and takes on the task of reviewing prerequisite education and other requirements for certification, this rule will be in place.  The technician certification is only available in the US and Canada.

Currently, BCIA is an “English only” organization. We offer our exams and reading sources in English only. However, we are exploring options for translating our exams into other languages based on demand. Should a group of applicants from another country formally express their wish to certify and can demonstrate the need for a translated exam, BCIA would work toward fulfilling this request.

BCIA offers certification for both entry-level and advanced health care professionals in Biofeedback, Heart Rate Variability, Neurofeedback and Pelvic Muscle Dysfunction Biofeedback – clinical only at this time. Until such time as a country or region forms a BCIA affiliate organization (a la Australia or Hispanoamerica), then BCIA will require all applicants for certification who reside outside the US or Canada to demonstrate that they have a valid license/credential to practice in a BCIA-approved health profession in the country where they reside."

  • All documents related to the education and license/regulation of your health care profession as required for certification must be translated and evaluated by an organization who is a member of NACES – the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services at www.naces.org

**If you have a license from a field such as medicine or psychology and your credential is in English, you do NOT need to submit evaluated transcripts for this requirement.
  • Didactic education may be completed by either using face-to-face or distance education venues from the list of BCIA-accredited training programs as posted in the appropriate certification area of our website. Some training programs are now offering didactic courses internationally; however, currently there are no face-to-face biofeedback didactic programs outside of the US and Canada.  Please visit the certification program of interest and review the full list of programs. For international programs that teach the neurofeedback didactics, please click here to view that list.

  • Mentoring may be accomplished by using long distance communication methods, so long as both parties are comfortable with the arrangements and the mentor meets BCIA standards. More than one mentor may be used.
