BCIA BF Mentoring Webinar - Interoceptions as Intervention
Friday, September 20, 2024, 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM MDT
Category: Events

Presented by Nate Ewigman, PhD, MPH, BCB

As the field of psychotherapy evolves to more fully incorporate somatic and psychophysiological causes and treatments for human suffering, an under-appreciated yet important transdiagnostic predictor of mental illness has emerged: interoception. Interoception refers to the human capacity of sensing, integrating and interpreting bodily sensations. However, consensus about how interoception is defined and measured has not yet been reached. Regardless, innovative mental health researchers and clinicians are beginning to translate basic research on interoception into novel clinical interventions in addition to identifying and enhancing the interoceptive components of established interventions. In this workshop, we will review the most clinically-relevant definitions of interoception, explicate the autonomic and central nervous system underpinnings of interoception, survey the landscape of modern and ancient interoceptive interventions, and practice experiential interoceptive exercises. Additionally, we will review proposed theories that enhancing healthy interoception may partially mediate the treatment efficacy of biofeedback, how to practically enhance healthy interoception within biofeedback and, finally, novel interventions that can be immediately incorporated into a clinical biofeedback practice.
