AAPP Roundtable - Legal and Ethical Issues in Pain Psychology
Thursday, January 26, 2023, 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM MDT
Category: Events

Presented by: Dr. Shaliza Shorey, Dr. Marilyn Jacobs

While roles of pain psychologists in medical and forensic systems have expanded, there are no published ethical guidelines for managing conflicts that arise as a result of working across multidisciplinary teams. In this case conference style presentation, we will discuss vignettes and identify ethical concerns in the clinical situation, and review APA Codes of Conduct guidelines to arrive at an ethical course of action. We will also discuss a framework that can be used for ethical decision making when working at the intersection of medicine and mental health and collaborating with third parties who do not understand the nature of our work.

Objectives:

  1. Identify common ethical dilemmas experienced by health & pain psychologists
  2. Apply two to three strategies to ethically manage these conflicts
  3. Describe the APA general principles most relevant to the practice of health & pain psychology to arrive at an ethical course of action
